Troubleshooting Connection between Hann File Transporter and Hann Portable Server

Windows Firewall

When you first launch Hann Portable Server and click "Start", Windows displays "Windows Security Alert" to inform you that Hann Portable Server is trying to accept incoming network connections, and gives you options for "Keep blocking" or "Unblock". You need to select "Unblock" as Hann File Transporter needs to connect to your computer.

If you missed the alert window or wish to check the current status, the settings are found under [ Control Panel ] » [ Security ] » "Allow a program through Windows Firewall".

If you're using a different security or anti-virus solution, please check its settings and make sure Hann Portable Server is not blocked or quarantined.

If you have an extra computer on the same network as your computer running Hann Portable Server, try opening Hann Portable Server from that extra computer in a Web browser. For example, if Hann Portable Server has an IP address 192.168.1.11 at port number 3888, start a Web browser from the extra computer and enter "http://192.168.1.11:3888" as destination address. If Hann Portable Server is setup correctly, you'll be redirected to "http://choung.net/hann" otherwise you'll get a connection timeout or similar error. (Please note that the extra computer must be a physically different computer in order for this test to work.)

If you have security concerns running Hann Portable Server, you can limit the access to USB connection only. More information is available at http://choung.net/hann/#hann-portable-server, "HOW TO ALLOW ONLY LOCAL ACCESS VIA USB CONNECTION".

Server IP address

While Hann Portable Server is active, it displays IP addresses on "Server Access Details" panel that can be used from Hann File Transporter. You need to enter one of those addresses on Hann File Transporter "hann server" window » "network address (IP)" edit box.

Please note that you need to use an IP address that can be accessed from other computers. Some of the addresses listed on Hann Portable Server are for internal use only. For example, 127.0.0.1 can never be accessed from other computers or devices.

If you prefer you can also use computer name ("Computer" » Properties » "Computer name") instead of its IP address.

Available connection methods

  1. Connecting via USB/Zune

While your Windows Phone is connected to your desktop computer via USB and Zune software is active, you can also connect to Hann Portable Server running on that computer from Hann File Transporter. You do *not* need any Internet connection or data service (ex. Wi-Fi, 3G/4G or etc.).

  2. Wi-Fi

Make sure your Windows Phone and your Hann Portable Server running desktop computer is in the same network address range. For example, if you have two wireless routers and one is configured to use 10.x.x.x address range and the other is set for 192.168.x.x, your Windows Phone on 10.x.x.x router cannot connect to the desktop computer on 192.168.x.x router. (You can configure your routers and make them work together, but it's too complicated and beyond the scope of this document.)

So, if you have multiple wireless routers, try using the same router or access point for both your Windows Phone and desktop computer.

  3. 3G/4G

If your Windows Phone is using 3G/4G, it's using the public Internet that's completely open. Although you can configure your desktop computer to accept connections from such network, we do not recommend using Hann Portable Server in such configuration for security reasons.

Please use Wi-Fi or USB method described above.

"Connection error" message

This message is displayed when your Windows Phone doesn't have any network connection. Try enabling Wi-Fi or use USB/Zune connection.

"No server response" error message

Hann File Transporter tried to connect to Hann Portable Server but failed. Please try checking the firewall and connection methods mentioned above.

Please note that Hann File Transporter asks the address of Hann Portable Server only once. If you wish to check or change the address, select "change remote computer" application bar menu.

No folders listed

Hann File Transporter has two panes; one for files and the other for folders. In order to switch between the two panes, please use flick gesture. (When you tap the current folder name, Hann File Transporter displays sibling folders.)

Context menu for a file or folder

Each file and folder has a context menu. It can be accessed by tap-and-hold gesture or tapping on the right half of an item. When you select "open" from a context menu, Hann File Transporter launches an appropriate built-in viewer for the selected file.

(Please note that the default viewer is text/html viewer and if the viewer does not recognize the content of the selected file, you may just see a white background.)

Failed to open an Office file after downloaded to Windows Phone

The current version of Windows Phone OS does not allow accessing other app's file storage area. So when an office file is downloaded and saved to Hann File Transporter's storage area, Office Mobile cannot access it. For the same reason, Hann File Transporter cannot access files in Office Mobile storage area.

So, if you wish to open an office file on your desktop computer from Office Mobile, open it directly from Hann File Transporter, i.e., connect to your desktop computer via Hann Portable Server and go to the folder where your office file exists, then bring up its context menu and select "open".

Hann File Transporter will then launch Internet Explorer Mobile and show your file as an office file icon. Tapping that icon opens Office Mobile. If you wish to access your office file even after Hann Portable Server is stopped, select "save as" menu from Office Mobile before closing it.
